The Lila Poonawalla Foundation celebrated their 12th Year of SCHOLARSHIP awards ceremony to merit and need passed Post Graduate Girl students. The foundation which is being spearheaded by the dynamic Padmashree Lila Poonawalla gave away 38 scholarships .

The function held at the Taj Blue Diamond, saw, Mrs. Vinita Bali, MD of Britannia Industries and the Guest of honour Supercop, Dr. Kiran Bedi, give away the Scholarships to the 38 Lilafellows.

8 girls will go Overseas for further studies, 20 girls will be going to various Universities in India and 10 girls have attained scholarships in the Special category. A total of 38 girls were given Scholarships.

The total Scholarships given out by the Foundation would be approximately 12 lakhs on these new Lila Fellows. SO far the Foundation has spent approximately 1.5 crores on the scholarships and other development programs for Lila Fellows in these
12 years.

Totally 38 girls have received the schlorships . 07 nos for overseas, 21 nos for study in India and 10 special scholarships. With this total number
of LF goes upto 385.

The details of the candidates who got the highest amount of scholarships in the year 2007 in their particular categories:

Ms.Pallavi Ozarde, Lila Fellow, 2007 –Overseas Category, Ms. Munni Mishra- Lila Fellow, Indian Category, Ms. Megha Kale, Lila Fellow 2007, Special Category.

All the 38 girls will become Lila Fellows for a life time and will join a club that will help them communicate with the foundation and amongst themselves. The foundation will also take part in all their activities like Birthday, Marriages, etc.

History of Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships owe their origin to the remarkable vision expressed in the Will of Cecil J. Rhodes, British colonial pioneer and statesman who died on March 26, 1902. He dreamed of bettering the lot of humankind through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Rhodes hoped that his plan of bringing able students from throughout the English-speaking world to study at the University where he took his degree in 1881 would aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Dedicated alumnus though he was, he was not moved merely by sentimental loyalty to establish the Scholarships at Oxford. Rhodes believed that, in addition to its eminence in the world of learning, Oxford University--with its emphasis on individualized instruction and on the community life provided by residential colleges--offered an environment highly congenial to personal and intellectual development.

Cecil Rhodes named nine beneficiary countries in his Will, and since 1904 other countries have been added to the list. In 1976, the scope of the Rhodes Scholarships was further extended when legal changes in the United Kingdom permitted the Rhodes Trustees to open the competition to women.

Rhodes described the qualities he sought in his scholars in the following terms:

My desire being that the students who shall be elected to the scholarships shall not merely bookworms I direct that in the election of a student to a Scholarship regard shall be had to

(i) his literary and scholastic attainments

(ii) his fondness of and success in manly outdoor sports such as cricket football and the like

(iii) his qualities of manhood truth courage devotion to duty sympathy for the protection of the weak kindliness unselfishness and fellowship and

(iv) his exhibition during school days of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in his schoolmates for those latter attributes will be likely in afterlife to guide him to esteem the performance of public duties as his highest aim.

The 52 original scholarships

The scheme was unprecedented in scale as well as vision. Rhodes' original will provided for 52 scholarships each year. 20 scholarships were for countries then forming part of the British Empire: two for Canada (one each for Ontario and Quebec), six for Australia (one for each colony or state), five for South Africa (one each for Natal and for four named schools in the Cape), three for Rhodesia, and one each for New Zealand, Newfoundland, Bermuda and Jamaica. 32 scholarships were for the United States: two every three years for each of the then States of the Union.

The administration of the scholarships was vested in a board of Trustees nominated in the Will. The first Trustee included the Earl of Rosebery, Earl Grey, Lord Milner and Sir Leander Starr Jameson. Later Trustees included Rudyard Kipling, Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, the first Viscount Hailsham, and Sir Kenneth Where. When Rhodes' estate was settled up in 1907 it was valued at £3,345,000. By 1924, owing to various charges, including death duties, it was estimated to be worth £2,276,000, its lowest valuation. At that point the investment portfolio was placed in the hands of Baring Brothers, who have administered the scholarship funds, under the direction of the Trustees, ever since. At the end of the financial year 1995-1996 the Trust's assets were valued at £145,638,000. The present Trustees are Lord Armstrong of Ilminster, Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover, Sir Richard Southwood, the Rt. Hon. William Waldegrave, Dr Colin Lucas, and Professor Robert O'Neill.

Scholarships to India and Women

While the 52 scholarships in the original will are still offered annually, a number of changes and additions have been made. These include introduction of scholarships to the Commonwealth countries including India. Prof. Asim Kumar Datta (Christ Church, 1947) and Late Mr. Lovraj Kumar (Magdalen, 1947) comprised the first batch of Indian Rhodes Scholars. For the first 38 years, India had one or two scholarships every year. The number of scholarships was increased to three per year in 1985, and four per year in 1991.

Until 1977 no women were elected to Rhodes scholarships, because the will as interpreted by the Rhodes Trust Acts of Parliament confined the awards to 'male students', when the U.K. government introduced legislation to outlaw sex discrimination a clause in the bill permitted single-sex educational institutions and charities to continue to discriminate in favor of one sex. Following lobbying by the Rhodes Trustees, a further clause was inserted into the eventual Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 allowing single-sex education charities to seek leave to open their awards to both sexes. Under this clause the Secretary of State for Education made an order in 1976 declaring Rhodes Scholarships to be tenable by women, and nullifying the effect of the words 'manly' and 'manhood' in the will.

In 1979, Amrita Cheema became the first woman from India to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and in 1995, Ms. Roopa Unnikrishnan became the 100th Rhodes Scholar from India. Since 1998, six scholars are elected from India every year. Unlike USA and many other Rhodes constituencies that have a "quota" for each state, Indian Rhodes scholarships are awarded on an All-India basis. However, our selection procedure involves zonal interviews (in the North, East, West and South zones) to shortlist candidates for the final interview and screening process.

Cecil Rhodes stated in paragraph 23 of his will:

Your scholarship application is due in ten days. It must have three recommendation letters attached, and, so far, you have not gotten any back from your teachers. A note to each of them last week hasn't gotten any results. Talk about strained nerves. All the work to get the application ready, and now letters are halting the process.

This is a scenario that repeats itself hundreds and thousands of times each year. You can avoid this problem by taking important appropriate actions. Start by asking for your recommendation letters at least six weeks in advance. This allows busy teachers to take their time in writing great responses. After two weeks remind them with a note in their mailboxes. Seven days after that make a visit to their classroom. Remind them in person that your application could be late and disqualified and that you will come by in a few days to pick it up. Thank him or
her again and then stop by once more.

One way to avoid total mayhem is to ask for more letters than is really needed (awards may vary in the number of letters needed).If the requirement is two for an award, ask four people.

If you are applying for more than a couple of scholarship awards (and you really should be), ask the teacher or whoever, if they would be willing to put their comments on a CD.

Remind them that you will be sending out dozens of applications. It will save them time. Then, you will bring the letters by for their signatures. They can inspect the documents before you send them in. A hand-written signature is always best.

Who should you ask? Does it make a difference? Yes, it does matter. Know this: English and foreign language teachers generally write the best letters. They personalize them and may write from a half to a whole page. They also produce results that have no spelling or grammatical errors. Again, and this is a general statement, coaches and physical education teachers write the shortest remarks and may have mistakes in spelling and grammar. But, go with your best options regardless of teaching position.

Use your high school letterhead, when possible.

Remember to ask your teacher if they can write a positive response. If not, move on. A probable scholarship winner fulfilled all requirements with a big plus and was in line to receive an $8,000 award. Everything was super except for one recommendation letter. Are there mistakes that can disqualify a college
scholarship application? You bet. Generally speaking, most local scholarship committees may find a few minor mistakes acceptable, but the higher the level of competition, the less tolerance there is for a faux pas. And when you go for the gold at the national level of competition, no mistake is permissible. Even at the local level, if the competition is heavy, one error can result in the loss of money.

Even small spelling mistakes can cause an application to be thrown out. A judge reviewed a submission from a girl who was second in her class. She had a 3.95 GPA. The problem? She misspelled salutatorian. Believe it! How does that happen? Surely, it should have been noticed. Was it a keyboarding error? Maybe.

Another application from a boy on the baseball team noted that he won the league batting title with a .259 average. Know anything about baseball? Most likely, the number 2 should have been a 3, 4, 5, or even 6.

Yet, another listed the applicant's age as "88." Do you suppose she was the oldest high school student in the country...in the world? But wait, she listed her birth date as eighteen years earlier. Those are the kinds of silly little miscues that can disqualify good candidates. Use the computer spell check and have someone read for context and spelling problems. Most people cannot do a good job of proof-reading themselves. Why take a chance?

Another blunder is leaving blank spaces. This is not a good thing. The committee may think that you are trying to hide something. If the question or statement is not applicable to you, write DNA on the line, which is the standard abbreviation or acronym for Does Not Apply.

Use a computer and keyboard whenever possible. Investigate the many inexpensive and free form-filling computer programs. No long hand here. Never write in pencil. And, NEVER, NEVER. EVER, EVER use whiteout.

Follow directions exactly. It is not unusual to see lists where paragraphs are required and vice versa. Sometimes a signature is needed with the name printed. A simple YES or NO may be necessary, Instead, an opinion is given.

Here's a tricky one that trips many juniors and seniors with honor roll credentials. After ten years in school, they still have problems using to, too, two, and they're, their,there.

Oops! I saw a sure regional and possible national winner disqualified, because her application missed the deadline date...by one day. Always beat the deadline. Mail early.

The High Commission of India, Colombo yesterday announced 40 scholarships for Sri Lankans under the “Scheme of Scholarship for Nationals of Sri Lanka” for undergraduate courses in Indian universities during 2008-2009.

The High Commission of India selects Sri Lankans for these scholarships in consultation with the Education and Higher Education Ministry to pursue undergraduate sources in different universities. The Higher Education Ministry has invited applications from candidates and the last date for submission of application forms is January 10, 2008.

All scholarships cover full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course and students are also paid a monthly sustenance allowance. The scholarship also covers accommodation allowance and an annual grant for books and stationery.

ICCR scholars in India are also provided healthcare facilities, first class train fare and an annual grant for educational tours to various parts of the country, apart from several other auxiliary benefits.

We will ensure that annually, over 100 lakh students get vocational training – which is a four-time increase from today’s level. Detailed plan for implementing these proposals will be spelt out in the next six months.

Under this programme, over the next 5 years, one million school students will be given science innovation scholarships of Rs. 5,000 each. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday launched the “Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships” for doctoral studies to be undertaken at St John’s College in University of Cambridge.

This scholarship, which is sponsored by Rolls Royce, Tatas and the BP Foundation, would fund four students annually and each student would get £35,000 annually for meeting various expenses.

Launching the scholarship, the Prime Minister, who studied in Cambridge, recounted his own experience and said “my life is a living example of what scholarships can do for those who come from less-privileged sections of society”.

He also said given his “modest background”, the fact that he was able to “study at all, not to mention at Cambridge” was a “testimony to the role of scholarships”.

Nat Puri, philanthropic businessman, launches engineering scholarship

London, Dec 6 - Millionaire businessman Nat Puri, a self-effacing Punjabi who donates half a million pounds to charities every year, is setting up a scholarship for Indian engineering students to study in the London university where he first made his mark.

The Nat Puri Scholarship, which will bring Indians to London South Bank University, is aimed at giving Indian scholars the financial opportunities that Puri himself never had when he first came to Britain from Chandigarh in 1966.

'I didn't get any scholarships, and I didn't have the courage to ask my family for money,' Puri told IANS.

'I checked soccer pool coupons in London on Saturdays and Sundays, and I lived in a rented bedsit. It wasn't the best of lives, but it helped me,' said the man who was listed by the Daily Telegraph newspaper last year as among the 20 wealthiest Asians in Britain.

'My purpose is just to be helpful,' said Puri, who founded the Nottingham-based Purico Group of companies and is valued at 100 million pounds (about $203 million or Rs.8 billion).

The scholarship will begin in October 2008, and may later be expanded to include students from other Commonwealth countries as well.

Puri trained as an engineer at London South Bank University and eventually bought the firm that gave him his first job. He built it up into the Melton Medes group, a packaging-to-plastics conglomerate with sales of 100 million pounds.
He said that although Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were 'doing a fantastic job', they did not have enough places.
'For every IIT admission, there are 10,000 applications,' he said, adding: 'People cannot afford to study abroad, not even people who are in jobs.'

Last week Puri was honoured by his alma mater with an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering in the presence of Lord Navnit Dholakia of the Liberal Party, former chancellor of the Exchequer Kenneth Clarke and Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker.

Conferring the honour, London South Bank Vice Chancellor Prof. Deian Hopkin said: 'Nat Puri has a certain style of doing things his way. He does it all in his own manner, often defying conventional logic but proving the success of real entrepreneurship.'

ICCR Scholarships

Foreign students sponsored by the Government of India for higher studies in the country, may soon have a wider choice of academic institutions to select from.

Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Karan Singh has said that the council would soon examine the issue of bringing deemed as well as private universities under the ICCR scholarship net.

As of now, the ICCR - an autonomous body of the ministry of external affairs (MEA) for promoting academic and cultural relations with other countries - refers all government-sponsored foreign students to state university-affiliated institutions or to courses recognised by the state universities.

"Selecting the right college remains one of the two major issues for foreign students coming to India," Singh said at the inaugural ceremony of the ICCR's new regional office at the Symbiosis Centre for Health Care here on Sunday. Singh identified delay in arrival of scholarship papers from the MEA to the ICCR regional offices as the other key issue. "The delay is a serious problem and we are trying to streamline the processes to resolve it," he said.

Singh said that widening the scholarship net was a policy decision that entailed discussion by the ICCR governing body. The move to include deemed and private universities would be in tune with ICCR's existing thrust on creating public private partnership (PPP) models for its various initiatives. "We will soon examine the issue," he promised.

Each year, the council sponsors nearly 2,000 students from 75 foreign countries for professional and higher education programmes. Pune accounts for 750 of these foreign scholars - the highest share of ICCR scholars in the country. The overall funding for 2,000 scholarships is worth Rs 30 crore.

According to Singh, 2,000 scholarships was a 'highly inadequate' number. "We have plans for a substantial increase in these numbers if we get the requisite funds from the MEA," he said.

Pune has 22,000 foreign students including the 750 ICCR scholars. Of these, 14,000 students study at the University of Pune (UoP) and its affiliated institutions. The Symbiosis International University (SIU), a deemed university, is host to over 2,000 foreign students including 50 ICCR scholars studying at Symbiosis' arts, science and commerce college, which is affiliated to the UoP.

Earlier, Singh handed out degrees to 1,100 pass-outs at the annual convocation ceremony of the SIU. The ICCR chairman emphasised the various virtues of education that help students face the challenges in their professional careers.
