British Council invites application for scholarship

Chennai: The British Council has invited applications for the Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Programme from Indians.

Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Rolls-Royce are offering the scholarships for the first time in India.

The programme will enable 12 scholars from India to explore science and innovation policy, from an academic, practical and personal perspective. .

The Programme offers an intense all-expenses paid 15-weeks course at the prestigious Said Business School, University of Oxford.

Its wide range of modules will include lectures, workshops, visits and interactions with high profile companies and scientists.

The last date for applying is November 21.

The details of schemes for providing pre-matric and post-matric scholarships to SC/OBC students are given below :-

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is implementing the following centrally sponsored schemes for providing pre-matric and post-matric scholarships to SC/OBC students. All these schemes are implemented by the State Governments/UT administrations, which are provided Central assistance in accordance with the funding pattern of each scheme.

1. Scheme of Post Matric Scholarships to the Students belonging to Scheduled Castes for Studies in India:

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to the Scheduled castes students studying at post matriculation or post-secondary stage to enable them to complete their education. The financial assistance includes maintenance allowance, reimbursement of non-refundable compulsory fee charged by educational institutions, Book Bank facility and other allowances.

Income ceiling:- The scholarship is to be paid to the students whose parent’s/guardian’s income from all sources does not exceed Rs. 1.00 lakh per annum.

Date of last revision:- The scheme was last revised w.e.f. 1-4-2003. The proposal for further revision is under consideration.

2. Scheme of Pre Matric Scholarships to the children of those engaged in unclean occupation:

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to the children of scavengers, sweepers having traditionally link with scavenging, flayers and tanners, irrespective of their religion, to pursue education upto matriculation level. The target group covers SC students also. The State Governments and Union Territory Administrations implement the Scheme. The financial assistance includes monthly scholarship and annual adhoc grant. The Scheme covers eligible students studying in Class I to X.

Income ceiling:- There is no income ceiling prescribed under the scheme.

3. Scheme of Post Matric Scholarships to the OBC Students:

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to the OBC students studying at post matriculation or post-secondary stage to enable them to complete their education. The financial assistance includes maintenance allowance, reimbursement of non-refundable compulsory fee charged by educational institutions, Book Bank facility and other allowances.

Income ceiling:- The scholarship is to be paid to the students whose parent’s/guardian’s income from all sources does not exceed Rs. 44,500/- per annum.

4. Scheme of Pre-Matric Scholarships to the OBC Students:

Under this scheme, scholarships are awarded to the students belonging to OBCs from Class-I to Class-X for day scholars and from Class-III to Class-X for hostellers. The duration of Scholarship in an academic year is 10 months. The scholarship is tenable in such institutions and for such pre-matriculation courses, which have been duly recognised by the concerned State Government/Union Territory administration. The financial assistance includes maintenance allowance and adhoc-grants.

Income ceiling:- The scholarship is to be paid to the students whose parent’s/guardian’s income from all sources does not exceed Rs. 44,500/- per annum.

The scholarship schemes are revised from time to time, keeping in view various factors including increase in Consumer Price Index (CPI) and availability of funds.

The proposal to increase the income ceiling, scholarship rates and other allowances under these schemes, except the “Pre-matric scholarship scheme for children of those engaged in unclean occupation” (which was last revised with effect from 1.4.2008), is under consideration. However, it is not possible to indicate a time-frame in this regard.

This information was given by Shri. D. Napoleon, the Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

I-genius scholarships by Max New York

NEW DELHI: The Max New York Life Insurance declared its first I-genius scholarships on Monday, last week. Delhi girl, Shruti Bhardwaj, won the highest prize of Rs 20 lakh in the junior category (class III to IV), while in senior category (class VI to VIII), there was a tie. Siddharth Yadav from Bulandsheher and Nityashree Ramakrishna from Bangalore, shared the prize money in this category of Rs 20 lakh with Rs 10 lakh each.

The scholarship program, launched in February, this year, by Max New York Life Insurance in association with The Times of India, rewards children with brilliance in both academics and extra-curricular activities to promote all-round development of the child.

Organisers said that over 10 lakh children from 500 cities were enrolled in the scholarship program and evaluation was done through a four-stage process spread over 10 months. "In addition to their performance in tests that evaluated their all round skills, the third stage of the scholarship program entailed a live interaction with jury through video conference. Total 52 candidates appeared for the final evaluation at Siri Fort in the capital, of which three one from the junior category and two from the senior category - walked away with the prize. The 50 other finalists received scholarships worth Rs 1 lakh each,'' said the organiser. He added that jury included Derek O'Brien, Palash Sen and author Ruskin Bond.

Rajesh Sud, CEO and managing director of Max New York Life congratulated the winners at a glittering award ceremony. "The I-genius program was conceived to engage beyond business with the parent community to understand their needs and promote all round development of the children. We will continue to look at innovative engagement programs like this in future,'' Sud said.

Fellowships for Science Studenst

CHENNAI: Dr Kalaignar fellowship for science for post graduate students are now available for students of the Madras University.

An endowment with a corpus fund of Rs.2.5 crore has been created to extend fellowships to the research scholars who did not get any other scholarships in the university including the ‘earn while you learn’ schemes.
The students would be given Rs 4,000 each to the 40 research students of the university.

The vice chancellor Prof S Ramachandran announced the formation of the endowment at a press meet here on Thursday.

Other fellowships to be given as a part of this endowment are: Thiruvalluvar fellowship for languages, Thanthai Periyar fellowship for Arts, and Perarignar Anna fellowship for social sciences.Also, later this year an international seminar on climate change would be organised by the English Department for which the Canadian government has given a grant of Rs 6.5 lakhs.

The vice chancellor brought cheer to teachers when he announced that the Syndicate had approved the hike in salary of teacher- research fellows, who would be now be paid Rs 10, 000 as against Rs 6,000, and guest lecturers, who would now receive Rs 15,000 as against Rs 6,000 they were paid so far.

New fellowships for Indian scholars at Cambridge

LONDON: The University of Cambridge has instituted three visiting fellowships for outstanding Indian graduates in memory of its alumnus and former Karnatak University vice-chancellor Dr D C Pavate.
The fellowships, open to Indian citizens under the age of 45, will be held at the Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

The Dr D C Pavate Fellowships are for a four-month period of study each at Judge Business School, the Centre for International Studies and either the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) or the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy.

The annual fellowships have been instituted under an agreement between the Dr D C Pavate Foundation, Karnatak University in Dharwad, India and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

The fellowships, to be started from next year, can be availed by PhD holders or those having first class Masters Degree or its equivalent, the university said.

The visiting fellow appointed to the Centre of International Studies will be selected after an all-India competition, it said.

The Fellowship at the Centre of International Studies will be effective from January 2010. Candidates with a good academic record in the areas of History, Political Science, International Economics, International Law or Military Affairs will be considered.

New Delhi: The Australian government has announced ten merit-based scholarships for students from Asia and Indian scholars are being considered "deserving" candidates.
Indian students would be the "best and deserving candidates" for the Prime Minister's Australia Asian Endeavour awards announced recently, according to the Australian High Commissioner to India, John McCarthy.

"I am sure that India will provide some of the best and deserving candidates for these scholarships. The students have shown a keen interest in studying in Australia in recent years. The Australian government is committing $14.9 million over four years to establish the scholarship programme and I am confident that this will yield beneficial results," McCarthy said in a statement here Tuesday.

The Endeavour awards are a part of the the Australian government's internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship programme for students from Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study in any field in Australia.

Commencing in 2010, ten scholarships will be awarded to the top 10 scholars from Asia each year. Around 40 awards are also available to Australian students for one year study and internship or work in Asia.

According to the high commissioner's office, India is now the second top source country for Australia's international education industry, with over 97,000 Indian enrolments in Australia in 2008. Around 102 Indian students have received study and research scholarships from the Australian government in the past 18 months.

323 Indian Students Secure PSD Scholarships

A total of 323 Indian students secured Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships this year, 171 of them for foreign degree programmes, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said today.

He said the other 152 scholarships were given to students to pursue studies at the five local private universities recognised by the PSD, namely the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST), Monash University, Nottingham University, Curtin University of Technology and Swinburne University of Technology.

Dr Subramaniam, who is MIC secretary-general, also said that some 240 Indian students, many with top grades, had appealed to the PSD to reconsider their applications.

"I have discussed the matter with the PSD and we expect a decision sometime next week," he said in a statement here.

Dr Subramaniam said he had also discussed the matter with MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

"The MIC has been receiving many appeal cases, especially for the overseas scholarships, and we have identified the potential students whose appeals could be considered by the PSD," he said.

Last year, 163 Indian students secured PSD scholarships for overseas degree programmes.

The PSD has interviewed 8,363 of the 15,084 candidates who had applied for scholarships under the foreign degree programme be--tween March 31 and April 3 this year.

Only 2,000 students will be offered scholarships for overseas courses already stipulated by the government.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) in association with the Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF) has instituted scholarships for two deserving Indian students for courses at Doha’s Carnegie Mellon University.

Scholarships will be given to students who major in either Business Administration or Information Technology and are selected to pursue these courses at Carnegie Mellon.

Announcing this yesterday, ICBF president Dr Mohan Thomas said the QOC had offered the 100% scholarship in recognition of the role of the Indian community and the ICBF in organising the ‘Doha Go For It’ campaign in March 2008. Several hundred Indians had taken part in the mass run hosted by the ICBF in association with QOC on March 27 last year at Khalifa Stadium. Indian Olympians Gurubachan Singh Randhawa and Shiny Wilson led the runners.

The two scholarships are together worth QR300,000, Thomas said.

Under the agreement between the ICBF and the QOC, the latter would directly pay the fee of the selected students to the university.

The scholarship could not be utilised for the Indian students of the previous academic year as Carnegie Mellon had six Indian students who were either self-financed or being supported with the college’s scholarship last year, Thomas explained.

US varsity launches Dr. Hargobind Khorana Scholarships for Indian students

New Delhi: A partnership has been signed among the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW), the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India (GOI) and Indo-US-Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) to launch a scholarship programme for Indian students.

This scholarship has been named in honour of Dr. Hargobind Khorana, who won the Nobel Prize in 1968 for his work at the interface of Chemistry and Biology while a member of the UW faculty.

The scholarship will provide an opportunity to Indian students to undertake research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) in summer 2009 for a period of 10 weeks.

Students enrolled in B.Tech, M.Tech and M.Sc courses in recognized institutions of higher education in India in the areas of Biotechnology including agricultural, health and biomedical sciences are eligible for the scholarships.

Australian varsity announces scholarships for Indian students

Newcastle (Australia): A new research scholarship programme has been announced by the University of Newcastle, Australia for Indian students to undertake PhD research.

The scholarship is inclusive of return airfare between India and Australia, entire tuition costs and a living allowance of up to Rs.7.5 lakhs per year for up to three and a half years.

Students who have completed their M.Phil. from India and have submitted their formal thesis dissertation as a part of the course are eligible for the scholarship.

Interested candidates can apply by submitting a completed application form of the University of Newcastle Research Higher Degree along with academic documents to ia@newcastle.edu.au.

Vel Tech scholarships for promising students

CHENNAI: Over Rs. 5 crore will be distributed this year to meritorious students all over India, thanks to the Mahatma Gandhi scholarship schemes offered by Vel Tech Dr.RR & Dr. SR Technical University.

Fully-paid scholarships will be offered to the first three plus-two toppers from each State applying for engineering at Vel Tech. Also one topper from each Union Territory will get the scholarship. It will take care of tuition, hostel and boarding fees for all four years of their education. “The top three applicants in each State will get total exemption regardless of any other factors,” says Vice-Chancellor Rangarajan Mahalakshmi. The 78 scholarships will be distributed to students independent of their financial ability or the courses they choose.

Another 100 applicants will receive 50 per cent coverage of their fees if they score 90 per cent average in the mathematics, physics and chemistry examinations. The deadline for submission of application is April 30 and all applicants must take the Vel Tech All India Engineering Entrance Examination on May 10.

Through these scholarship schemes, Vel Tech aims to provide premier engineering and management courses for the most deserving and promising students, Ms. Mahalakshmi said. However, the scholarships will be available only to students applying to the main university at Avadi here, and not to the other institutes affiliated to Anna University, the University of Madras or MGR Medical University.

The Vel Tech Institutions were founded by Professor of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering R. Rangarajan, now Chancellor of the university, who was a man of modest means. “He started from scratch,” said Ms. Mahalakshmi. Through his academic performance and experience as a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board engineer, he became an original equipment manufacturer for Ashok Leyland. He soon realised that his calling lay in educating the next generation of industrialists. He and his wife, Sakunthala, who is Pro-Chancellor, established Vel Tech University at Avadi, which became a deemed technical university 15 years ago.

Offering undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in engineering, management, computer science and applications and humanities, the university has maintained a reputation for its performance in placements, according to Professor of Mechanical Engineering I. Ravindranathan, who is in charge of placement operations. It has also partnered with Oracle, Microsoft, CISCO, NASSCOM and the British Council for Business English to provide professional certification programmes for its students.

According to Director K.V.D. Kishore Kumar, last year over 85,000 students nationwide participated in Vel Tech’s placement events and 99 per cent of the institutions’ eligible students were offered jobs (1,000 offers) in leading companies including Tata, Reliance and Infosys (in total 3,000 job offers were made).

For the first time, students graduating from high schools in India and accepted into undergraduate programs at Simon Fraser University can apply for an Outstanding SFU India Entrance Scholarship.

SFU is offering three scholarships worth $10,000 each to students from India graduating with the highest academic standings in their schools.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the Indo-Canadian donors who have made this special entrance scholarship possible,” says SFU Director of Enrollment Services Mehran Kiai.
“This special scholarship program complements other entrance scholarships for international students that SFU already offers.”

Only students entering SFU during the fall 2008 semester are eligible for the three special scholarships. Scholarship applications must be submitted by April 30 to be considered.

Regional disparity tags US scholarships

Eastern India sends the least number of scholars, North leads.

Recent reports released by United States Education Foundation in India (USEFI) say the eastern region of the country has the lowest number of Fulbright and Humphrey scholars in the country.

Eastern India also has the lowest number of applicants for the world-renowned research grant Fulbright Scholarship. The Fulbright programmes are for working professionals in India, students, researchers and teachers. The professionals pursuing the courses are provided stipend as well as accommodation in the US.

In the last eight years, the total number of Fulbright and Humphrey fellowships from the eastern region was 71 — the lowest among all four regions. The highest number was 182 from the northern region, followed by 114 from the South and 92 from the West.

Each of the other three regions has consistently posted more than double the number of applications from the Eastern region over the last few years for the scholarship programmes. Last year, scholars from Bengal received eight Fulbright fellowships, while Delhi bagged 19.

According to Sunrit Mullick, regional officer and educational adviser, USEFI, the low numbers could be attributed to ‘a singular lack of ambition’ among people of eastern India. “People in Kolkata and the NorthEast seem to be satisfied with their careers,” Mullick said.

“Lack of information is another reason. In many instances, when Fulbright brochures were sent out to various colleges and universities in the East they landed up at the principal’s office.

But it has been found that often the principal’s office does not bother to give the information to the students or put up the brochure for public view. So, many students do not even know when the scholarship was announced or when the deadline passed,” he added.

New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A)

Wednesday maintained that the fee hike it announced last week will not be reviewed and its officials told Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh that there would enough provision for scholarships for needy students. Senior IIM-A officials, including institute governing council chairperson and industrialist Vijaypat Singhania, met Arjun Singh and told him that the institute’s corpus for scholarships would be increased from Rs.4 million to Rs.85 million a year.

They argued that the fee hike would not affect a larger class of students, especially the poor.

“We have told the minister that despite the fee hike we announced recently, our institute would provide scholarships to 62 percent of the students joining IIM=-A,” Singhania told reporters.
Singh said while he did not want to interfere with the IIM’s decision, he wanted to know how they expect the poor to pay the fees.

“I do not want to get into the IIM’s autonomy. I am only concerned about students of weaker sections and poor students,” he told reporters.

“The HRD ministry would not review the fee hike of the IIMs as the minister was convinced that scholarships would be given to those students who cannot afford to pay the fee,” said a senior ministry official.

“The minister was convinced by our explanation,” Singhania added.

The IIM-A Saturday announced hike in its fees from Rs.4,50,000 to Rs.1.15 million for a two-year post-graduate programme while the IIM-Kozhikode Monday increased its fee from Rs.3,85,000 to Rs.600,000.

The Lila Poonawalla Foundation celebrated their 12th Year of SCHOLARSHIP awards ceremony to merit and need passed Post Graduate Girl students. The foundation which is being spearheaded by the dynamic Padmashree Lila Poonawalla gave away 38 scholarships .

8 girls will go Overseas for further studies, 20 girls will be going to various Universities in India and 10 girls have attained scholarships in the Special category. A total of 38 girls were given Scholarships.

The total Scholarships given out by the Foundation would be approximately 12 lakhs on these new Lila Fellows. SO far the Foundation has spent approximately 1.5 crores on the scholarships and other development programs for Lila Fellows in these

History of Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships owe their origin to the remarkable vision expressed in the Will of Cecil J. Rhodes, British colonial pioneer and statesman who died on March 26, 1902. He dreamed of bettering the lot of humankind through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Rhodes hoped that his plan of bringing able students from throughout the English-speaking world to study at the University where he took his degree in 1881 would aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Dedicated alumnus though he was, he was not moved merely by sentimental loyalty to establish the Scholarships at Oxford. Rhodes believed that, in addition to its eminence in the world of learning, Oxford University--with its emphasis on individualized instruction and on the community life provided by residential colleges--offered an environment highly congenial to personal and intellectual development.

Cecil Rhodes named nine beneficiary countries in his Will, and since 1904 other countries have been added to the list. In 1976, the scope of the Rhodes Scholarships was further extended when legal changes in the United Kingdom permitted the Rhodes Trustees to open the competition to women.

Rhodes described the qualities he sought in his scholars in the following terms:

My desire being that the students who shall be elected to the scholarships shall not merely bookworms I direct that in the election of a student to a Scholarship regard shall be had to

(i) his literary and scholastic attainments

(ii) his fondness of and success in manly outdoor sports such as cricket football and the like

(iii) his qualities of manhood truth courage devotion to duty sympathy for the protection of the weak kindliness unselfishness and fellowship and

(iv) his exhibition during school days of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in his schoolmates for those latter attributes will be likely in afterlife to guide him to esteem the performance of public duties as his highest aim.

The 52 original scholarships

The scheme was unprecedented in scale as well as vision. Rhodes' original will provided for 52 scholarships each year. 20 scholarships were for countries then forming part of the British Empire: two for Canada (one each for Ontario and Quebec), six for Australia (one for each colony or state), five for South Africa (one each for Natal and for four named schools in the Cape), three for Rhodesia, and one each for New Zealand, Newfoundland, Bermuda and Jamaica. 32 scholarships were for the United States: two every three years for each of the then States of the Union.

The administration of the scholarships was vested in a board of Trustees nominated in the Will. The first Trustee included the Earl of Rosebery, Earl Grey, Lord Milner and Sir Leander Starr Jameson. Later Trustees included Rudyard Kipling, Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, the first Viscount Hailsham, and Sir Kenneth Where. When Rhodes' estate was settled up in 1907 it was valued at £3,345,000. By 1924, owing to various charges, including death duties, it was estimated to be worth £2,276,000, its lowest valuation. At that point the investment portfolio was placed in the hands of Baring Brothers, who have administered the scholarship funds, under the direction of the Trustees, ever since. At the end of the financial year 1995-1996 the Trust's assets were valued at £145,638,000. The present Trustees are Lord Armstrong of Ilminster, Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover, Sir Richard Southwood, the Rt. Hon. William Waldegrave, Dr Colin Lucas, and Professor Robert O'Neill.

Scholarships to India and Women

While the 52 scholarships in the original will are still offered annually, a number of changes and additions have been made. These include introduction of scholarships to the Commonwealth countries including India. Prof. Asim Kumar Datta (Christ Church, 1947) and Late Mr. Lovraj Kumar (Magdalen, 1947) comprised the first batch of Indian Rhodes Scholars. For the first 38 years, India had one or two scholarships every year. The number of scholarships was increased to three per year in 1985, and four per year in 1991.

Until 1977 no women were elected to Rhodes scholarships, because the will as interpreted by the Rhodes Trust Acts of Parliament confined the awards to 'male students', when the U.K. government introduced legislation to outlaw sex discrimination a clause in the bill permitted single-sex educational institutions and charities to continue to discriminate in favor of one sex. Following lobbying by the Rhodes Trustees, a further clause was inserted into the eventual Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 allowing single-sex education charities to seek leave to open their awards to both sexes. Under this clause the Secretary of State for Education made an order in 1976 declaring Rhodes Scholarships to be tenable by women, and nullifying the effect of the words 'manly' and 'manhood' in the will.

In 1979, Amrita Cheema became the first woman from India to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and in 1995, Ms. Roopa Unnikrishnan became the 100th Rhodes Scholar from India. Since 1998, six scholars are elected from India every year. Unlike USA and many other Rhodes constituencies that have a "quota" for each state, Indian Rhodes scholarships are awarded on an All-India basis. However, our selection procedure involves zonal interviews (in the North, East, West and South zones) to shortlist candidates for the final interview and screening process.

Cecil Rhodes stated in paragraph 23 of his will:

Your scholarship application is due in ten days. It must have three recommendation letters attached, and, so far, you have not gotten any back from your teachers. A note to each of them last week hasn't gotten any results. Talk about strained nerves. All the work to get the application ready, and now letters are halting the process.

This is a scenario that repeats itself hundreds and thousands of times each year. You can avoid this problem by taking important appropriate actions. Start by asking for your recommendation letters at least six weeks in advance. This allows busy teachers to take their time in writing great responses. After two weeks remind them with a note in their mailboxes. Seven days after that make a visit to their classroom. Remind them in person that your application could be late and disqualified and that you will come by in a few days to pick it up. Thank him or
her again and then stop by once more.

One way to avoid total mayhem is to ask for more letters than is really needed (awards may vary in the number of letters needed).If the requirement is two for an award, ask four people.

If you are applying for more than a couple of scholarship awards (and you really should be), ask the teacher or whoever, if they would be willing to put their comments on a CD.

Are there mistakes that can disqualify a college
scholarship application? You bet. Generally speaking, most local scholarship committees may find a few minor mistakes acceptable, but the higher the level of competition, the less tolerance there is for a faux pas. And when you go for the gold at the national level of competition, no mistake is permissible. Even at the local level, if the competition is heavy, one error can result in the loss of money.

Even small spelling mistakes can cause an application to be thrown out. A judge reviewed a submission from a girl who was second in her class. She had a 3.95 GPA. The problem? She misspelled salutatorian. Believe it! How does that happen? Surely, it should have been noticed. Was it a keyboarding error? Maybe.

Another application from a boy on the baseball team noted that he won the league batting title with a .259 average. Know anything about baseball? Most likely, the number 2 should have been a 3, 4, 5, or even 6.

Yet, another listed the applicant's age as "88." Do you suppose she was the oldest high school student in the country...in the world? But wait, she listed her birth date as eighteen years earlier. Those are the kinds of silly little miscues that can disqualify good candidates. Use the computer spell check and have someone read for context and spelling problems. Most people cannot do a good job of proof-reading themselves. Why take a chance?

Another blunder is leaving blank spaces. This is not a good thing. The committee may think that you are trying to hide something. If the question or statement is not applicable to you, write DNA on the line, which is the standard abbreviation or acronym for Does Not Apply.

Use a computer and keyboard whenever possible. Investigate the many inexpensive and free form-filling computer programs. No long hand here. Never write in pencil. And, NEVER, NEVER. EVER, EVER use whiteout.

Follow directions exactly. It is not unusual to see lists where paragraphs are required and vice versa. Sometimes a signature is needed with the name printed. A simple YES or NO may be necessary, Instead, an opinion is given.

Here's a tricky one that trips many juniors and seniors with honor roll credentials. After ten years in school, they still have problems using to, too, two, and they're, their,there.

Oops! I saw a sure regional and possible national winner disqualified, because her application missed the deadline date...by one day. Always beat the deadline. Mail early.

How could this happen? An app arrived without the parent permission slip signature.

The High Commission of India, Colombo yesterday announced 40 scholarships for Sri Lankans under the “Scheme of Scholarship for Nationals of Sri Lanka” for undergraduate courses in Indian universities during 2008-2009.

The High Commission of India selects Sri Lankans for these scholarships in consultation with the Education and Higher Education Ministry to pursue undergraduate sources in different universities. The Higher Education Ministry has invited applications from candidates and the last date for submission of application forms is January 10, 2008.

All scholarships cover full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course and students are also paid a monthly sustenance allowance. The scholarship also covers accommodation allowance and an annual grant for books and stationery.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday launched the “Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships” for doctoral studies to be undertaken at St John’s College in University of Cambridge.

This scholarship, which is sponsored by Rolls Royce, Tatas and the BP Foundation, would fund four students annually and each student would get £35,000 annually for meeting various expenses.

Launching the scholarship, the Prime Minister, who studied in Cambridge, recounted his own experience and said “my life is a living example of what scholarships can do for those who come from less-privileged sections of society”.

He also said given his “modest background”, the fact that he was able to “study at all, not to mention at Cambridge” was a “testimony to the role of scholarships”.

London, Dec 6 - Millionaire businessman Nat Puri, a self-effacing Punjabi who donates half a million pounds to charities every year, is setting up a scholarship for Indian engineering students to study in the London university where he first made his mark.

The Nat Puri Scholarship, which will bring Indians to London South Bank University, is aimed at giving Indian scholars the financial opportunities that Puri himself never had when he first came to Britain from Chandigarh in 1966.

'I didn't get any scholarships, and I didn't have the courage to ask my family for money,' Puri told IANS.

'I checked soccer pool coupons in London on Saturdays and Sundays, and I lived in a rented bedsit. It wasn't the best of lives, but it helped me,' said the man who was listed by the Daily Telegraph newspaper last year as among the 20 wealthiest Asians in Britain.

'My purpose is just to be helpful,' said Puri, who founded the Nottingham-based Purico Group of companies and is valued at 100 million pounds (about $203 million or Rs.8 billion).

The scholarship will begin in October 2008, and may later be expanded to include students from other Commonwealth countries as well.

Puri trained as an engineer at London South Bank University and eventually bought the firm that gave him his first job. He built it up into the Melton Medes group, a packaging-to-plastics conglomerate with sales of 100 million pounds.
He said that although Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were 'doing a fantastic job', they did not have enough places.
'For every IIT admission, there are 10,000 applications,' he said, adding: 'People cannot afford to study abroad, not even people who are in jobs.'

Last week Puri was honoured by his alma mater with an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering in the presence of Lord Navnit Dholakia of the Liberal Party, former chancellor of the Exchequer Kenneth Clarke and Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker.

Conferring the honour, London South Bank Vice Chancellor Prof. Deian Hopkin said: 'Nat Puri has a certain style of doing things his way. He does it all in his own manner, often defying conventional logic but proving the success of real entrepreneurship.'

ICCR Scholarships

Foreign students sponsored by the Government of India for higher studies in the country, may soon have a wider choice of academic institutions to select from.

Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Karan Singh has said that the council would soon examine the issue of bringing deemed as well as private universities under the ICCR scholarship net.

As of now, the ICCR - an autonomous body of the ministry of external affairs (MEA) for promoting academic and cultural relations with other countries - refers all government-sponsored foreign students to state university-affiliated institutions or to courses recognised by the state universities.

"Selecting the right college remains one of the two major issues for foreign students coming to India," Singh said at the inaugural ceremony of the ICCR's new regional office at the Symbiosis Centre for Health Care here on Sunday. Singh identified delay in arrival of scholarship papers from the MEA to the ICCR regional offices as the other key issue. "The delay is a serious problem and we are trying to streamline the processes to resolve it," he said.

Singh said that widening the scholarship net was a policy decision that entailed discussion by the ICCR governing body. The move to include deemed and private universities would be in tune with ICCR's existing thrust on creating public private partnership (PPP) models for its various initiatives. "We will soon examine the issue," he promised.

According to Singh, 2,000 scholarships was a 'highly inadequate' number. "We have plans for a substantial increase in these numbers if we get the requisite funds from the MEA," he said.

Pune has 22,000 foreign students including the 750 ICCR scholars. Of these, 14,000 students study at the University of Pune (UoP) and its affiliated institutions. The Symbiosis International University (SIU), a deemed university, is host to over 2,000 foreign students including 50 ICCR scholars studying at Symbiosis' arts, science and commerce college, which is affiliated to the UoP.

Earlier, Singh handed out degrees to 1,100 pass-outs at the annual convocation ceremony of the SIU. The ICCR chairman emphasised the various virtues of education that help students face the challenges in their professional careers.

Reuters Foundation Fellowships

The Reuters Foundation Fellowships at Oxford offer a practical form of professional assistance to established and mid-career journalists. Its purpose is to allow journalists to tackle subjects in greater depth than is possible under deadline pressure.

Around 25 journalists from around the globe study in Oxford each year on Fellowships of either three, six or nine months, covering one, two or all three terms of the academic year. Fellows may join the Institute in October, January or April.

The Fellowship has three main facets. Firstly, Fellows are expected to produce a substantial piece of work to an academic standard. They are required to complete a 8,000 – 10,000 word research paper of publishable quality either as part of the Institute’s research output or independently (for example, as a survey of an important subject, magazine article or part of a book). Fellows may use multimedia in their work. Fellows have to present their research findings in a seminar open to the University.

Secondly, the Institute organises regular seminars, debates, lectures and study trips. TheRISJ seminar is held weekly during term-time at Green College as is an in-house seminar to which Fellows are expected to read a paper. During Michaelmas (autumn term) and Trinity (summer term) the Reuters Institute also runs a weekly ‘Media and Politics Seminar’ jointly with the eminent political scientist, Dr David Butler, at Nuffield College.

The Institute’s media expertise is also bolstered by the related work of the Oxford Internet Institute (http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/), the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (http://pcmlp.socleg.ox.ac.uk/) and the International Centre for Media and Communications Management, currently being developed by the Saïd Business School. While modalities of selecting meritorious students are yet to be worked out, it is proposed that the future scientists would be caught young in the 12th class itself.

The financial assistance would be given to such students while pursuing BSc and MSc courses. “We have proposed to give adequate financial support to sufficient number of students to foster talent in scientific research. The government is considering to award 1 lakh scholarships of Rs 1 lakh each.

Meritorious students pursuing university education in science stream would be eligible for the award. The proposal is expected to be incorporated in the 11th Five-Year Plan, and expected to be announced in the forthcoming National Development Council (NDC) meeting,” a source in the government said.

It is understood that the proposed scholarship would be modelled on the line of INSPIRE programme mooted by the department of science & technology (DST).

INSPIRE stands for innovations in science pursuit for inspired research. The programme aims at reaching out to the young talent and help them to pursue their interest in science.

“It is also an intervention devised to redress low entry of students into science and technology streams,” a DST source said. After the programme would get a formal approval, the selection procedure for the meritorious students would be announced.

The scholarship is proposed to be instituted to strengthen India’s position as global knowledge hub and maintain the leadership position which it enjoys currently, an official said. There have been some concerns as most of the students were opting for management degrees and moved away from undertaking research to the multi national companies (MNCs).

It is expected that the budget allocation of scientific departments would be enhanced significantly in the 11th Plan. The plan allocation has been doubled from about Rs 12,000 crore in the 9th Plan to about Rs 25,000 crore in the 10 Plan and it is planned to increased it approximately four fold in the 11th Plan, official sources said.
